The Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District (KLWTD) provided wastewater treatment for the KLWTD service area and for Islamorada, Village of Islands. The plant is permitted to treat 3.45 MGD of wastewater to AWT standards. Filtration is included in the treatment process. Since the KLWTD WWTP is an SBR process, an effluent equalization tank is used to buffer the flow to the filters. The booster pumps that feed the effluent from the equalization tank were originally programmed to constantly maintain a falling level in the equalization tank, which led to hydraulic problems during decants. Weiler Engineering Corporation was tasked with redefining the control logic to alleviate the hydraulic overloads. The new control system will provide for three operator flow set points, controlling four pumps with variable frequency drives. The new control strategy allows for flexibility to adjust flows based on equalization tank levels and current daily flows.
