The City of Marathon Florida Area 3 WWTP serves the western end of the incorporated area. Unusually high influent strength at this WWTP is due to the concentration of restaurants and fish houses, which caused treatment challenges. Weiler Engineering Corporation (WEC) was hired to perform a study to identify sources of high strength wastewater. It was determined that the sources were widespread and implementation of a pretreatment program would be problematic. For these reason, WEC evaluated various options for improving the efficiency of the treatment process to address these unique wastewater effluent characteristics.
Based on this evaluation, Weiler Engineering recommended upgrades to the Area 3 WWTP that included increased aeration capacity, an influent equalization tank and expanded filtration capabilities. WEC completed the design in 2016, with construction starting if the fall of that year. Substantial completion of the construction project will be reached in February 2018.
